In 1952 Patti Page sang with a different reference but speed forward 60 years and the days of shop windows have been replaced with the screens of smartphones. A US start-up is working with the Weather Underground API (datafeed) to create a new app which fuses the daily weather forecast displayed next to a picture of your favourite pet on your iPhone.
Weather Puppy, launched through the iPhone store this week is already proving to be a popular download for iPhone users. Suraj Hemnani explains: “Weather Puppy is an iPhone app that makes you smile every time you check the weather by showing it to you with adorable puppies that change based on the weather & time. You can even upload pictures of your own pup into the app!”
By creating this rather simple idea of marrying up the weather report with the ability for users to bespoke its appearance with their favourite pet photo you have the basis of a very interesting opportunity. It’s well documented that Weather apps are the most popular downloaded apps (In the US, weather apps have the largest audience with 31 million smartphone users – 40% of the US smartphone audience) according to a 2011 report by comScore.
The decision of working with the Weather Underground API provides the Weather Puppy app with a global reach (Weather Underground provide weather forecasts in multiple locations around the world) and includes a 3 day weather forecast, today’s high and low, feels like, humidity, wind and more.
With recent reports documenting that the demand for pet accessories will reach $17.2bn by 2015, Weather Puppy also provides a wealth of commercial opportunities through advertising and sponsorship.
Further details of the app include:
– Two Free themes in the app (Glamour Puppy Theme, Outdoorsy Theme )
– Two $0.99 seasonal themes in the app (Halloween Theme, Fall Colors Theme )
– One $0.99 “Add Your Own Puppy” Theme
– Each theme has about 18 cute puppy backgrounds for every weather condition/time. – Share your puppy with friends on Facebook & Twitter
